Del and his cohorts are secretly selling repeater rifles to Chief Dark Thunder and the Comanche Indians, who do not want the railroad crossing their land. Del and rancher Broden want the Overland Pacific to re-route through Oaktown, where they own property. A hired gun and corrupt sheriff both end up dead. I didn't know what to expect from Bob Shaw but I was pleasantly surprised. It really was of a unique storyline which was innovative and kept the reader hooked. The ending of the 3rd book of the Land and Overland trilogy was worth searching for.

These 3 books overall were a splendid read and worth having. Thanks a lot, Bob! This science fiction novel is the third part of a trilogy and, although it can stand alone, is probably best read as part of the series. It is set some fifty years after the events in the first book The Ragged Astronauts and the main character is the grandson of the original hero, Toller Maraquine. The story begins on one of a pair of binary planets which share the same atmosphere, allowing travel between them by hot-air balloon. When one airship with its crew goes missing, Toller sets off to the rescue, only to discover a massive strangely crystalline structure blocking the path between the two worlds.
In my opinion this novel is the best of the three; wildly imaginative and fast paced. If you like classic sci-fi, you'll like this. Bob Shaw goes off at full speed, creates a third planet and an entire set of superior beings to bring a surreal, science-fantasy touch to the series. I was very very let down. There was more than enough subject matter in the first book which went undeveloped; he went off at a tangent in the second volume and wayyy off course in the third. Interstellar travel in a wooden ship? This is a feeble third part of a trilogy.
