Liver: A Fictional Organ With a Surface Anatomy of Four Lobes

It looks like you are located in Australia or New Zealand Close. The most revealing passages in Liver are not the verbose deconstructions of London topography - 'the sphincter of the Old Street roundabout', nor its ghastly inhabitants, but the odd peans to beauty and humanity - a red admiral butterfly, the thought of a reformed prisoner teaching children with learning difficulties. Selfland is a murky place, and Will Self bravely eschews sophisticated literary London for the harsh but more realistic job of forcing his nose up against life's many smelly vices and uglinesses.

But he has also become a self confessed walking addict in recent years, and his perambulations enable him to escape the filth of trendy London, and appreciate a human existence that can be more elevated, even if only fleetingly. A book with a single internal organ as its unifying theme. I double-dog dare you to find a likable character in this collection of stories; I sure couldn't do it.

The book, on the other hand, I liked- a lot.

Will Self makes painfully clear how he feels about the human condition. We are gluttons, slowly poisoning ourselves with various toxins. Each story has its own unique twists and turns. The first story puts us in a seedy bar in London, the smell of which nearly rises from the page. We are introduced to a sorry lot of lifelong until death patrons, each on his on leg of the journey to death by alcohol.

The second story is about a woman dying of cancer who is suddenly cured just as she has chosen to end her own life. How will she treat this gift? Mad Men meets mythology in modern day London in "Prometheus. Here we meet addicts swirling down their own chosen drain. Will there be redemption? What do you think? Self is obviously a bright man, and I'm certain that I missed a number of references and metaphors in Liver, still, I think this one is a keeper.

Prometheus stands, quivering, by the water cooler in the inert core of the open-plan offices of titan, and advertising agency renowned throughout London - and beyond - for its genius at breathing fire into the most sodden products, and the dampest services; igniting them, then fanning them up, so that their notoriety leaps and spreads from demographic to demographic, until entire populations are consumed by a mania for their possession.

What's my name? My name is legion, for I - we - are many. It may take a while, it may perhaps seem cruel, but then there's no finer flavour in the universe than foie humain. Ite missa est. Got, it is the dismissal. It was all an advert. But most of all we relish birdy num-num. Birdy num-num.
