And there's no remedy for memory your face Is like a melody, it won't leave my head Your soul is hunting me and telling me That everything is fine But I wish I was dead. Every time I close my eyes It's like a dark paradise No one compares to you I'm scared that you won't be waiting on the other side Every time I close my eyes It's like a dark paradise No one compares to you I'm scared that you won't be waiting on the other side.
All my friends ask me why I stay strong Tell 'em when you find true love it lives on Ah, that's why I stay here. And there's no remedy for memory your face Like a melody, it won't lift my head Your soul is hunting me and telling me That everything is fine But I wish I was dead. The only thing I can say to conclude is: read for yourself and hopefully you will find it a great read. Sorry, Gene Desrochers!
Sep 01, Stephanie Jane Literary Flits rated it liked it. See more of my book reviews on my blog, Literary Flits Dark Paradise is a fast-paced thriller which hits the ground running pretty much as soon as Boise's plane lands on the Caribbean Island of St Thomas. Desrochers jumps between two storylines - that of Boise trying to discover what went wrong for his childhood friend Roger, and of uncovering the motive for a young woman's kidnapping. Boise teams up with newspaper reporter Dana, but often dumps her when his own investigation seems more fruitful.
My idea of noir is more the darkly atmospheric novels of, say, Pascal Garnier or Frederic Dard and I wouldn't put Dark Paradise into the same category at all, however it is certainly an engaging read and I would happily recommend it to readers who like action-packed stories.
I appreciated the glimpses we get of life on St Thomas behind the tourist destination veneer. I wasn't previously aware of the different cultures existing side by side so was interested to learn about this.

Desrochers gives a good sense of the island and I liked the inclusion of patous speech which gives a strong sense of authenticity and is not at all difficult to understand! I would have liked a better sense of who the characters were because I didn't feel I got to know Boise or Dana particularly well and most of the supporting cast only got a brief look-in. There was too much inexplicable running around for my tastes and I wasn't always sure what was going on or why, however Dark Paradise did keep my interest throughout.
Jul 09, Adam Lottes rated it it was amazing. A great debut mystery novel that has a beat all its own. We are introduced to Boise Montague, a man who is depressed and grieving the death of his wife. He returns to his childhood home of St.
Thomas in the Caribbean. In describing the exotic locale Desrochers delivers as he draws upon his personal experiences and observations of time spent there. Boise soon discovers that his childhood best friend has been murdered due his criminal activity related to drugs. This doesn't seem right to Boise and A great debut mystery novel that has a beat all its own. This doesn't seem right to Boise and he sets out to find the truth. And in this we get treated to two mysteries in one novel. Which is how he gets involved with cranky reporter Dana looking for the next big scoop.
She offers to help Boise in quest for the truth if he will help her with a case involving a missing girl. Together they form a unique friendship as they encounter drug dealers, a shady doctor and a powerful and corrupt businessman.

And multiple times their lives are put in danger as they are kidnapped, shot at, beaten up and left barely alive. I enjoyed Mr. Desrochers first novel. It has a different beat than usual mystery novels and one that I came to appreciate. By beat, I mean the flow of the novel. Yes is it fast-paced but it moves along in a unique manner, which serves the overall novel well.
Boise is a character I would love to learn more about and possibly see a tale about his life in Los Angeles with his wife, back when he was at the top of his game. The characters and locations are nicely fleshed out as well. Tommy is one eccentric character I was greatly amused by.
As well as the cantankerous lesbian couple who run the inn Boise stays in. The only trouble I had with this novel was the back and forth between English speaking and the Caribbean dialect. It isn't a bad thing as the dialect helps to paint a better picture of the location. But I can see some readers will have difficulty with this and I want you to be fore-warned.
And I also want you to push ahead through it because it really does serve the book well. I've never been to the Caribbean and hearing it described, not only physically but also in the spirit of the place, made me feel like I was right there running away from bullets alongside Boise. I look forward to seeing where Boise goes from here. Desrochers gives us a great debut mystery that will leave you chuckling, thrilled and guessing. Sep 12, Jessica Belmont rated it really liked it. The setting of Dark Paradise is very realistic. I love the rich descriptions of St.
I really felt like I was there. To top it off, the local dialect used made this even more compelling because you really get the sense of the people living there. I love the mystery. Time doesn't just stand still, and sometimes paradise isn't always bright. Dark Paradise hooked me from the beginning, and it was a sort of slow burn that kept me reading all the way through.
I am a big fan of our main character The setting of Dark Paradise is very realistic. I am a big fan of our main character, Boise. He is absolutely far from perfect, with some health issues and his love of beer. He's sympathetic and very relatable. Gene Desrochers created an extraordinary cast of characters. I highly recommend checking out Dark Paradise! It's a gripping, mystery with a very relatable main character.
I'm looking forward to reading more from Gene Desrochers. All opinions are my own. May 20, Steven Russo rated it it was amazing. I really enjoyed Dark Paradise. I thought the book well written and the multiple mysteries kept me engaged throughout.

He enjoys his Guinness maybe to excess and seems somewhat less than fastidious, and this makes him all the more believable and endearing. Overall, a fast, fun and thoroughly enjoyable read. I highly recommend it. Sep 13, Cheryl M-M rated it really liked it. The personal experience of St. Thomas, the surroundings and the people is what gives this story the extra spice and flair. Boise returns home looking for some peace after a personal tragedy. His wife died in a tragic accident, but he is convinced it was murder.
The police get fed up of his conspiracy theories and he decides to feed his frustrations elsew The personal experience of St. The police get fed up of his conspiracy theories and he decides to feed his frustrations elsewhere. He does what many of us do when we are lost or are coming to the end of our lives, he goes looking for connections from the past. The house he used to live in, the streets he played in and the friends he grew up with. Boise is surprised to find his childhood friend dead, a drug dealer killed in the middle of a business exchange.
I think his fragile state of mind is what sets him on the path of detective come saviour. He has this deep need to do what he feel is right and to instil a sense of justice on the world. The trouble is that everyone else has no interest in his quest, and he ends up stirring up a few hornet nests. Thus starts a series of connections with colourful and hilariously eccentric characters, who aid and push him towards a tragic and violent solution.
A combination of characters I hope to see again, because Boise Montague has made his mark on the genre of Caribbean noir, as has the author of course. I do think the end was a bit like coming out of the eye of a hurricane and straight into a short, turbulent and destructive storm. Then again the whole story was a whirlwind from the start. I would like to see his sidekicks developed more, and of course will he ever find out what happened to his wife?
It has the exotic nuances of a Caribbean story mixed with a noirish feel, and yet it is also full of snark and the laid back feel of a humid, sun-stroked island. It is definitely worth a read. Sep 14, Donna Maguire rated it really liked it Shelves: books-read , book-reviews , crime-mystery-suspense , kindle-read. I really enjoyed this story, it is well written and kept me engaged throughout. It has some well developed characters that work well within the plot. I do enjoy a good murder mystery and this one was well crafted and very enjoyable.
It has a great pace and I really enjoyed where the author takes us with the story. The writing style is very good and I enjoyed the flow of the story. As the first book in a new series this is a great way for it to have started — I am certainly looking forward to reading more in this series! Four stars from me for this one — highly recommended!!
Jan 16, Mindy Fox rated it it was amazing. This book is an exciting mystery and a real page turner. I couldn't put it down. Not only is it an intriguing story, but the characters are great. I can really imagine Boise, the main character, running around the Caribbean island getting himself into all kinds of trouble with his side kick Dana, a tough journalist who is always on Boise's case. These two are hilarious as they put their lives on the line running down leads and searching for clues.
I can't wait for the next book!!! Feb 18, The Rev. Really well written. The first novel kept my attention riveted.
The author has created real characters who struggle with contemporary issues. Thank you! Jan 12, Holly Kammier rated it it was amazing.
This book took me beyond the tourist traps and deep into the dark heart of the Caribbean. The ending shocked me. I loved everything about this thriller noir and highly recommend it to my friends. In Dark Paradise, the debut novel and first book of the Boise Montague Series, author Gene Desrochers weaves an intriguing murder mystery tale that follows private investigator Boise Montague's investigation into the murder of his childhood friend Roger Black.

The police thought that Evelyn's death was an accident, but Boise thought it was murder but he couldn't prove it, and the police had threatened to arrest him for interference in the investigation.
Heartbroken and defeated, Boise hoped that by coming home to St. Thomas, he would be able to pick up the pieces of his life, but the island isn't the same as when he grew up there, and he finds out that his childhood best friend Roger Black had turned into a drug dealer and died two years ago on Christmas Eve.
Boise decides to look into Roger's death, thinking he was murdered, and solicits the help of Dana Goode, a local reporter for The Daily News. While investigating Roger's death, Boise and Dana find themselves unexpectedly getting involved in a kidnapping investigation of a sixteen year old local girl that entangles them in more danger than they bargained for all in the name of getting justice. Author Gene Desrochers provides a multi-layered storyline that has enough mystery, suspense, drama, treachery, secrets, and intriguing twists and turns that keeps the reader guessing, while weaving an intricate and complicated web of what the motive of Roger's murder and the local girl's kidnapping could have been, and the spectrum of possible participants who could have been involved in committing them.
