Sheer Presence

Professor Kessler specializes in nineteenth-century European art and visual culture, and is also interested in art historical theory and methodology, critical theory, fashion studies, and gender and visual representation. Focusing mainly on the work of Monet, Caillebotte, Degas, and Manet, this project demonstrates the personal and cultural significance of such deceptively mundane subject matter and analyzes images of food in relation to broader constructions of identity, family, memory, modernity, and gastronomy in late nineteenth-century France.

Sheer presence: the veil in Manet's Paris - Marni Reva Kessler - Google Books

Funded by the Borchard Foundation. Friendly folks. A big city vibe.

A veil was protection for the proper woman from the vices associated with the modern city, preserving—at least on the surface—her femininity and class superiority. Positioning the veil directly at the intersection of feminist, formalist, and social art history, Kessler offers a fresh perspective on period discourses of public health, seduction and sexuality, colonial stereotypes, and, ultimately, an emerging modernity. Marni Reva Kessler is assistant professor of art history at the University of Kansas. Get A Copy. Paperback , pages. More Details Original Title.

Aug 23, Margaret Sankey rated it liked it. But art historian Kessler noticed that no one had studied the representation of veils in the many paintings of the late 19th century, particularly Manet's portraits of Berthe Morisot, analyzing them for the meanings or subversions that audiences at the time would have taken in but which we had overlooked.
