None of the hikes requires special skills under summer conditions and, if you are not very fit, simply turn back when you feel like it although there are also specific short walk suggestions with most of the itineraries. The book embraces a huge area and the walks are widely scattered. It is assumed that users of the book will be exploring the Pyrenees by car.

Places where you will find hotels, restaurants and hostel accommodation are listed in the text and highlighted on the touring maps. Updates for walks and car tours drives in in the Pyrenees given below supplement those provided in the guidebook. It is vital that this Update is read in conjunction with the text of the book, but note that the Update applies only to the edition stated and not to any earlier editions.

As you can see from the website below, you can no longer drive your own vehicle along the Llech forest road to Prat Cabrera and a pre-booked jeep transfer is the only option for getting up that far, other than walking.

To add to the confusion, the French text version of the site which one would presume is more accurate is rather different to the English one. It was also clear that the forest roads would be closed altogether from late Autumn until roughly mid-May, which would mean jeep transfers would not be available. The French version has a recent update:.

Otherwise the description is still fully accurate — we did the full walk to the refuge and then back via Dona Pa. Walk 11 : You describe only one walk in Andorra, the Madriu walk. Descend along the track back to La Massana. Easy to access with public transport.

A Book of the Pyrenees - Sabine Baring-Gould - Google Libros

This walk is quite long and strenuous with parts between Enclar and Carroi quite vertiginous. It is excellent if you are interested in an adventure. It also gives wonderful views. It is possible to shorten it by walking up to the Pal ski station from the Collada, where you will soon have contact with roads. On the south the calcareous bed is lifted in great slabs, but split, and does not form so ragged and so lofty a range.

But to the west the chain does not drop abruptly into the Atlantic, but trails away for miles, forming the Asturian mountains, and then, curving south, serves to part Galicia from Leon. The range of the Pyrenees dividing France from Spain is miles in length. The chain to the west wears a different aspect from that in the east.

The Basque mountains are clothed with trees, pines and birch, walnut and chestnut, and above them are turf and heather. But the eastern extremity is white and barren. This is due to the fact that the Western Pyrenees catch and condense the vapours from the Atlantic, whereas the Oriental Pyrenees do not draw to them heavy and continuous rains. The boundary between the regions and climates is Mont Carlitte. In the Western Pyrenees the snow line lies far lower than in the east. On the former of these glaciers hang in wreaths, whereas there are none in the east.
