Psychoanalytic Reflections on a Changing World
Wesleyan University Press. The titles of the edited collections indicate the nature of contemporary challenges that well-established authors explore side by side with their junior colleagues. These are problems that the turbulent and ever-changing world throws at us where power is often intertwined with vulnerability. The approaches presented in all volumes are inspired by object relations theory and the Tavistock School's use of psychoanalytic ideas to study group dynamics and behaviours in organisation, together with socio-analysis bringing action research methods and insights from social systems thinking and social dreaming.
All are deployed to uncover the unconscious processes influencing culture, politics and, even, finance. Concepts of defences developed by Melanie Klein and Wilfred Bion such as splitting, projection, projective identification, introjection, and transference , are drawn upon for a better understanding of how a group, an organisation, a society, or a global systems works.
Such an approach has been criticised for extrapolating individual psychic phenomena into groups, or worse for treating groups, organisations, or even entire societies as entities akin to "patients" or "analysands".

Yet psychodynamic thinking and socio-analysis is primarily concerned with what occurs in the in-between space among individuals who interact. In other words, these approaches deal with how the psychic worlds of individuals co-create group and organisational mindsets. These connect well with contemporary issues of relationality and socially situated subjectivities in feminism, postcolonial theory, critical social theory, and cultural studies. Another way to understand the orientation and purpose of these three books, therefore, is to say that they never cease from engaging the individual with the collective.
Thus the trilogy ably navigates the old dualisms between agency and structure, while many contributions presciently identify the implications of intersecting historical legacies for re-producing subjectivities and group identities.

When this succeeds it is truly commendable see for instance Act I in Volume One comprising three "scenes" or chapters dealing with various aspects of war and conflict; or Chapter Eleven on pandemic and contagion and Chapter Twelve on climate change in Volume Two; or lastly, the only three chapters in Part III dealing with power and vulnerability of global finance in Volume Three.
